When should a child be examined
for the first time? |
 |
The first examination should be between 6 and
8 years of age. If a child has a significant jaw
and/or teeth discrepancy, it should be dealt with
soon after first permanent molars (6 year molars)
grow in. The fore-mentioned discrepancy includes
severe overbite, crossbite, underbite, openbite,
and crowded teeth. |

Am I too old for braces? |
 |
Today, orthodontic treatment is a viable option
for almost any adult. It is well recognized that
when left untreated, many orthodontic problems may
become worse. When you have a malocclusion (“bad
bite”), your teeth may be crowded, excessively
spaced or may not fit together correctly. Such conditions
may lead to dental health problems. Crowded teeth
are hard to clean and, given time, may contribute
to tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss.
Bad bites can also result in abnormal wearing of
tooth surfaces, difficulty chewing and damage to
supporting bone and gum tissue. Poorly aligned teeth
can contribute to pain in the jaw joints (TMJ).

What kind of braces are there? |
 |
Metal
braces |
Traditional, small metal
braces that are gently bonded to each
tooth, and a wire connects them together
for guidance. Most efficient and cost-effective
treatment option, especially for children. |
Clear braces |
Similarly, clear braces are bonded
to each tooth. These braces are made
of either plastic or porcelain. This
method combines the efficiency of tooth
movement and esthetic superiority. However,
meticulous oral hygiene is required
to keep them nice and clear. |
Invisible
braces (Invisalign®) |
A set of dental models are scanned
into a computer software by which teeth
are manipulated in very small increments.
Numerous sets of clear retainers are
fabricated off these manipulated dental
models. Patients are to wear these invisible
retainers around the clock (except for
eating). Least efficient and cost-effective
treatment option. |
Functional
appliance |
Only used for younger children with
severe jaw discrepancy or harmful habits.
Helps minimize growth of jaws in unwanted
direction. Also helpful in breaking
harmful habits such as finger sucking,
tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing. |

Can I have Invisalin®? |
 |
Invisalign® is a wonderful replacement for
braces for mainly adult patients. However, what
it can do for us is still very limited, and it costs
more than braces. We recommend it only to those
who are extremely concerned with their appearance,
and have only minor orthodontic issues to be addressed. |
